UCLA's Department of Economics Receives Gift for Graduate Student Fellowships and Prizes for Research Papers

The Department of Economics at UCLA received a major gift in support of its Graduate Program from Robert Ettinger, Class of UCLA 1980.

Mr. Ettinger, an honors graduate in Economics from UCLA, is the President of Flaherty & Crumrine, Inc. (www.flaherty-crumrine.com), a Pasadena-based investment counseling firm that manages portfolios of preferred securities for institutional clients, including Fortune 100 companies, insurance companies, privately held companies, and utility Nuclear Decommissioning Trusts (NDT's). Ettinger, pictured above (on the right) with the chair of the Department of Economics, Professor V. Joseph Hotz, was the Keynote Speaker at the Department's Graduation Convocation for its graduating undergraduate majors on June 17, 2001.

Mr. Ettinger's generous gift was given to provide fellowship support for entering students in the Department's graduate program. In addition, this gift has been used to establish the Robert Ettinger Prize(s) for Graduate Student Research to be awarded annual for the best papers completed by two UCLA third-year Economics graduate students.

The Department is extremely grateful for Mr. Ettinger's crucial help in supporting our efforts to maintain and enhance the quality of our Department's graduate program over the coming years.
