"If it were just for the final result, one could as well become a painter. Photography is both the challenge to express one's thoughts and feelings with light and shadow, as well as the subtle pleasure that the truly obsessed photographer derives from operating motorized cameras, expensive equipment, and mysterious chemicals."

Matthias Döpke is an assistant professor in the Department of Economics at UCLA, Los Angeles, USA.

"A picture has to be fascinating instantaneously. Only if it is self-explanatory, a photography can put questions to the viewer. For that reason I produce my pictures according to the EASY-LOOKING principle. As a photographer, I am forced to accept the technical limitations of photography. The precise knowledge of these limitations creates the possibility to develop a personal style and to use them consciously in the creative process."

Ralf Brüggemann is an assistant professor of econometrics at Humboldt University Berlin in Germany.

"I am not specifically interested in motives that cross my way just by accident. For me photography is action, not reaction. This implies that the photographer takes complete control of what ever happens in front of his camera. The picture is created before it is taken, and the challenge is to reproduce exactly the blueprint that I have in my mind."

Christoph Müller is a lawyer for Continental AG in Hannover, Germany.

Carsten Schreiber

"Normally I am very modest, but sometimes the artist inside of me speaks up and claims that my work stands in direct connection with René Margritte, Otto Dix and August Sander. Whether my pictures are created in my head or somewhere else I still did not find out. Everything is possible, as long as it is fun and looks good."

Carsten Schreiber is a doctoral student in history and politics at Leipzig University, Sachsen, Germany.
