The Populpeso when it was last seen. |
|
Winter 2005 witnessed the transformation of the GEA to a populist Facundocracy which calls itself "The People's GEA". With Vice-President and Treasurer Seba Sosa far away (there are claims that he fled the country), there was nobody to maintain the system of checks and balances within the leadership of the GEA. The Vice-President is known for his strong stance in favor of monetary discipline and sound fiscal policies. In his absence, President Facundo seized the opportunity and promoted Rolf the Webmaster to Monetary Authority of the People's GEA. Together, they set the GEA on a populist course. Under the motto "Margaritas for everyone" they created a new currency -the fragile Populpeso- to finance the populist spending spree on which the GEA embarked. First year's benefited from the new policy as they were able to erase from their memories the damage inflicted by the Macro midterm. Increased alcohol consumption was the path chosen by most of them. Apparently Question 2 in the midterm had been tricky... But, as it often happens to idealistic and populist governments, the incipient life of the Populpeso was cut short by the greed of unscrupulous arbitrageurs who spotted an opportunity for profit. As the speculative attack loomed, the Monetary Authority tried to save the day by getting the backing of powerful financial investors. The negotiations were tough and ended unsuccessfully. The Monetary Authority was quoted as saying "I spoke to them with my heart and they answered with their pockets". Finally, and after only one day of its creation, the inconvertibility of the Populpeso was declared. Despite the recent failure in sustaining its currency, The People's GEA has promised to stay on its populist course. It is still unclear how the vice-president will react once he returns from abroad. |

FEB 19, 2005: INCONVERTIBILITY OF THE POPULPESO
Dear fellow graduates
The People's GEA monetary authority is forced to tamper with the newly
introduced currency.
Starting immediately, the inconvertibility of the Populpeso is declared. The GEA
will not accept the outstanding Populpesos in circulation as a means of payment.
It is in times of emergency like these, when the student body must remain strong
with the help of the firm leadership of the People's GEA.
Further, the monetary authority of The People's GEA repudiates the speculative
attack against the Populpeso, performed by unscrupulous vulture investment funds
operating under the disguise of innocent graduate students.
The GEA is already planning the introduction of a new currency to fund its
future populist endeavors.

FEB 18, 2005: "HOW POPULISM WILL TAKE EFFECT"
"How populism will take effect".
So as we were saying, tomorrow FRIDAY at 5.30 the GEA will hold a Beer Bust at a
Special Venue, because the GEA loves its people and lives for its people.
This Special Venue is ACAPULCO, a bar in Westwood, not to punish the poor
classes that do not own cars, so that the masses can walk from school. The GEA
repudiates inequality.
The second populist measure is that the GEA will print its own currency: "The
GEA Populpeso".
You will be able to use the Populpeso as a means of exchange for Margaritas,
Beer & Drinks!!!
We promise that the currency will keep its value. We will *never* devalue.
Some snacks will be served too.
So remember, tomorrow FRIDAY
ACAPULCO
5.30pm
See you there. Yours truly,
