I work in both the areas of international trade and industrial organization. I have studied the impact of trade liberalization between countries that differ in the quality of their institutions; I argue that liberalization’s impact on the distributions of income and human capital—both within nations and across their boundaries—depends on the extent of such institutional differences. I am concerned with industrial organization because market structure and firm interactions shape economic outcomes. This has led me to investigate the manner in which firms choose their geographic locations as well as the characteristics of the products that they produce.
