Department of Economics
Commencement 2009

Student Speaker Application

The Department of Economics chooses an outstanding student to present a ten-minute speech to his/her fellow graduates at the Department of Economics Commencement each year. There will be approximately 6,000 graduates and guests in attendance in Pauley Pavilion on Saturday, June 13. If you are interested in applying for the honor of presenting your speech at this year's Commencement, please click on the Apply Online link. You will find instructions on how to upload your application and speech.

You must have a minimum 3.0 GPA in your major and cumulative UCLA GPA to be eligible to apply. A committee of Department of Economics faculty and staff will review all applications and choose the finalists. The finalists will then be asked to present their speech to the committee and the honoree will then be chosen from that group. Please ensure that your speech is no longer than ten minutes.

The student speaker and four guests will be invited to a reception held prior to Commencement. You will have the opportunity to have professional photos taken of you and a few of your guests, as well as to meet many of the Department of Economics faculty and our keynote speaker. In addition, we will reserve seats for your guests in the VIP section in Pauley Pavilion. The guests of the finalists who are not selected to give the speech will be provided with reserved seats as well. We hope that you will apply for this once in a lifetime opportunity. The deadline to submit your speech is TUESDAY, MAY 12, 2009 at 4:00 p.m.
